Build a Better Tomato Cage

Q:  “The tomato cages I’ve been using are flimsy! Where do you get stronger ones without breaking the bank?”

Good question! I feel the same way, and the most economical, and sturdiest will be ones we make ourselves.

To start a tomato cage at least 4 ft tall: buy a roll of 14 – 16-gauge wire with 4” x 6” openings; you should be able to find it in a 30’ roll. Unroll the wire on the ground. Using wire-cutters, cut a 4’ section of fence for each cage you want. Cut through the horizontal fence wires, beside one of the vertical wires until panel is free. Line up the mid-point section with an 8’ long very sturdy wooden stake. Use a staple gun to fasten the wire panel to the stake. This should leave the point (ground) end 18” below the edge of the fence. Bend the edges of the fence to form a cylinder, then wrap the cut ends of the horizontal wires around the vertical wire to close the hoop. Use good gloves! This kind of cage will hold any tomato and will last for years.
